OUT NOW - Lemon No.3: “A Clockwork Lemon”

Between these pages lurk the restless spirits of some of the greatest characters in all of film. The fantastical figures that Stanley Kubrick brought to the screen are impossible to resist, and like Jack Torrance, we finally decided to stop fighting possession and just give in to it. We’re glad we did. Hang on… the voices are trying to tell us something – time for a bit of the ol’ Ultraviolence? Angels’ trumpets and Devil’s trombones? All of that and more, my brothers and sisters! Tightly wound and running fast, we present to you: A Clockwork Lemon.A loving tip of the bowler cap to the famed director, Lemon 3 features exclusives with Malcolm McDowell, Billy Corgan, Leelee Sobieski, Ray Bradbury, Pop Levi, Matthew Modine, Gary Baseman, Chip Kidd, Goldfrapp, Gregory Crewdson, Damian Loeb, Jack Kirby, Laura Albert and Allen Jones. Lavishly illustrated, designed and expertly produced, Lemon 3 also contains a pull-out poster by Stefan Bucher and an homage to the late, great Flexi-Disc featuring a newly minted version of “Singin’ In The Rain” by Gavin Friday. Levi and Sobieski reprise Clockwork’s Alex DeLarge and The Shining’s Jack Torrance, channeling two of Kubrick’s most enduring characters on alternate covers shot by famed photographer Jill Greenberg.Lemon 3 is $8.95, and available at Borders, Barnes & Noble and finer newsstands nationwide.

A Clockwork Lemon: The Soundtrack

When we choose a theme for Lemon, we don the veil completely. Every issue is a masquerade party, really, and when the work’s done and the product ships, it’s almost a pity. So we’ve decided to throw a real party this time. Or two. Lemon has teamed up with acclaimed DJ Michael Smith and 10 Cane Rum to stage events, called Milk Bars, in NY and LA in early 2008. Lemon Milk Bars will the be the spirit of our third issue made flesh: style, substance and a whole lot of fun transpiring in sleek venues on dates soon TBA.

But ’til then, you can get a taste of what Michael Smith has cooking up his sleeve. Hand-picked from Ghostly International’s rich vaults, he’s woven a beautiful sonic mix to get you in the right frame of mind.

Just CLICK HERE to launch the Milk Bar player and behold a brief sliver of the dobby warbles that will fill the air at the Milk Bar. And check back here for the latest updates on dates and locations!

FLASH: John Malloy Finds G-Spot!

Baltimore has all the fun. Last week, G-Spot showcased a splendid assortment of artworks by artist, illustrator, designer, and valued Lemon contributor John Malloy, and the lucky ones walked away with their very own Malloy creation tucked under their arm. John has done some inspired work for a variety of cutting edge publications—check out his Billy Corgan and Pop Levi spreads in our current issue—and his stuff is just plain cool. This was John’s first event at G-Spot since the release of his kick-ass graphic novel “Amnesia”, and the evening‘s soundtrack was provided by The Hymnen, Oranges Band and Impossible Hair. For those of you that missed out, never fear: Amnesia is available for purchase at a select group of discerning bookstores and the hipper literary boo-teeks. In the mean time, keep your eyes peeled for his next graphic tale, “Channel One”, dropping imminently

Gavin Friday’s “Singin’ In The Rain”

With one of the rainiest Irish summers on record, Lemon thought it fitting to ask legendary Dubliner Gavin Friday if he might record something appropriate for the weather. Despite a hectic recording schedule and performances in a British Shakespeare production, he obliged us with cheer. The former Virgin Prunes frontman and confidant of U2 created this haunting and emotional rendition of “Singin’ In the Rain”, made famous by Gene Kelly and later infamous by Malcolm McDowell in Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. Given Gavin’s penchant for surprise, we had no idea what we were in for. But when his MP3 came through, we were ecstatic…

CLICK HERE to hear and download this track, recorded just for Lemon!

Pictured above – and available only in copies of Lemon 3 – is our homage to the late, great Flexi-Disc 45rpm: printed with artwork for Gavin’s “Singin’ In The Rain”.

Win A Full Set of Jack Kirby’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”

Jack Kirby is a legend. His contributions to the comics world were so powerful that he transcended the medium and became a pop culture icon himself.
